Peaks of the Pyrenees, 3000m Summits

The Peaks of the Pyrenees trips are designed to ascend the highest peaks in the Pyrenees mountain range. The highest peaks reach levels of over 3000 m (~9850 ft) in height. In this range those heights are well above tree line and are easily categorized as alpine ascents. Many of the 3000m peaks in the Pyrenees are accessible by hiking alone. However, the peaks presented here follow routes that require hiking and scrambling. These make for challenging but very rewarding ascents. Some even require the use of a rope, either to protect an exposed section, to ascend, or to descend. Rappelling may also be required for some sections. These are high mountain adventures in semi-technical terrain. As with any adventure in the high mountains inherent risk is involved.

Multi-day Adventures

These hiking and scrambling trips are multi-day adventures. This is required because the approach to some of these peaks takes a long time. All the peaks are in the alpine zone of the Pyrenees so the terrain is also rocky and can be difficult to negotiate. Therefore, we will encounter sections that take longer to pass. As you can see, these adventures are best set up to be completed over a couple of days. Most can be accomplished in two days. Thus, we will sleep in the mountains for at least one night. Some of the peaks are close to mountain huts. Huts in the Pyrenees provide meals and a place to stay. By using huts we will limit the weight and gear that we need to bring.

However, other peaks do not have huts nearby, therefore we will set up a bivouac. A bivouac is a temporary shelter or camp. Using the leave no trace principals, we will sleep and eat at the bivouac area and then clean up the next day, leaving no trace that we were there. With a bivouac, we will need to bring our own sleeping bags, sleeping pads, food, and depending on the forecast, possibly a tent or tarp. Even if there is a hut nearby, you can also chose to do a bivouac if you'd like. It is a great way to spend a night in the mountains. If you've never slept under the stars in the mountains, it is a highly recommendable experience and will definitely add another level to your experience.

The Peaks of the Pyrenees trips are customizable. This means that you can add on more days if you'd like. In a handful of areas in the central Pyrenees, there are clusters of several 3000m peaks. Summiting all these peaks in one or two days usually isn't possible. However, it is possible to summit several 3000m peaks by adding on 1-2 more days. Now you're starting to talk about a bigtime mountain trip!
