Via Ferrata, Canyoning, Caving Valencia
Via Ferrata, Canyoning, Caving Valencia
Via Ferrata, Canyoning, Caving Valencia. This adventure starts with a group of friends that were studying abroad for a semester in Valencia. They were interested in leaving the city for a day of adventure. Something different than the day to day city life. They were looking for a spark and a way to create an experience that stood out above the typical activities that the city offers. After speaking with them for a few minutes I knew exactly what they needed, so off we went for some via ferrata, canyoning, and caving adventures in inland Valencia province.
Via Ferrata
This group was in their late teens, full of energy, excitement, and adventure. They had never done a via ferrata before but after safety explanations and some practice at the bottom, we started up. They were thrilled beyond belief, as is natural for your first via ferrata. The experience is unique and addictive. Even for those that are afraid of heights the experience is memorable and fun. It's fun if you are with a guide that is trained in the safety and security of the activity but also trained in how to deal with people when fear and doubt creep into your head.
This is often under appreciated although it happens almost every time with beginners and even intermediate or advanced participants too! When we arrived at the top of the ferrata, they were ecstatic, relieved, but wanting more! We stopped here and had lunch, admiring the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and river.
Canyoning
After lunch, we headed to the canyon. Before entering the canyon we discussed what we were getting ourselves into, how the equipment works, and practiced some techniques to build confidence. But again, there's nothing like starting that first rappel, leaning back and trusting the equipment and the set up. After getting over that initial fear, the rest was cream cheese. What a great experience and a great beginners canyon for first timers. Vertical and horizontal progression mixed together to provide an incredible day. Rappelling, hiking, scrambling, and even some climbing.
Caving
In the Mediterranean region of Europe, the vast majority of the rock is limestone. The karst formations that are in this area have eroded and changed over millions of years. This gives us the outdoor playground that we see today which allows us to rock climbing, hike, and do amazing via ferratas and canyoning all over the region. These formations also give rise to thousands of caves, dotted all over Spain and in all the European countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea.
Valencia is no different, and after our via ferrata and canyoning adventure, these young, energetic, and intrepid travelers were up for another activity, caving. The caves that we entered were non-technical so no ropes or rappels were necessary. We were able to walk through this cave system with it's high ceilings. There were a few places to scramble and also crawl on all fours, but it was simple and fun experience and a great way to round out the day.
