Patagonia Backcountry Hiking and Camping
Patagonia Backcountry Hiking and Camping
Come with Bigtime Aventura for a Patagonia Backcountry Hiking and Camping adventure of a lifetime! Patagonia is wild and almost entirely untouched by humans. This is a place where you can really get back to basics and enjoy nature in it's pure form. Patagonia is an enormous region, encompassing most of the southern cone of South America. Argentina and Chile are the two countries that make up the region of Patagonia. About 90% of Patagonia is in Argentina. Both sides of the border offer remarkable areas for adventure and wilderness experiences. Some people prefer the Chilean side and others the Argentine side. You can't choose poorly.
The big difference is the weather. Chile tends to be more humid and receive more rain as the storms come off the Pacific Ocean. As those storms become blocked by the Andes the Argentine side tends to be drier, especially the farther east you go. The pampas, or plains, of Patagonia Argentina are desert steppe. These are dry, flat, open grasslands. Of course, this is the general trend based on the topography but the weather and climate changes drastically with latitude and altitude as well. Patagonia is known for it's unstable weather so if you venture to this area of the world be prepared for ever-changing conditions.
Patagonia Backcountry Hiking and Camping Routes
Our routes are almost completely on the Argentine side. During the 5-day backcountry trip we spend the entire time in Argentina. However, on the 8-day backcountry trip we spend a few days in Chile. During both of these trips we will apply a minimalist approach and set up bivouacs at strategic places to sleep. Unlike our hut to hut trips, on these backcountry trips each person is required to carry a larger backpack and carry more gear and food. Therefore, as with most backcountry hiking and camping trips, they are usually more demanding because of the increased weight.
The terrain in the area is rugged. We will spend some time on marked and groomed trails but also a significant amount of time off of any marked trails. This is a serious off the beaten track experience! This also adds to the allure and the experience.
